U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders received the COVID-19 vaccine from U.S. Capitol physician, Dr. Brian P. Monahan on Saturday. Lots of people upset that politicians are getting vaccinated first before frontline workers. Totally understandable where the anger is coming from, but what people are overlooking is that this is a public-health stunt to convince people that being vaccinated for covid-19 is safe.

Of course the doctors need it more, but having Pence and Sanders get it means that hundreds of thousands of people will feel reassured enough to get it as well. Also, more people getting covid-19 vaccinated means less cases the frontline workers have to deal with, and less death overall. Let the politicians get it and run their PR machines- it’ll make the doctors’ jobs easier in the long run.

Covid-19 vaccines going to politicians

We act like the number of politicians getting vaccinated for covid-19 is in the thousands. It’s not. The number of vaccines going to Pence and Sanders, etc is pretty small relative to the number of doses out there. We should be more worried about vaccine storage and distribution. Already hearing stories of difficulties not wasting doses due to the storage requirements. The number of doses lost to that vastly outnumbers the number of doses given to some politicians.

It is important for our leaders to model good behavior to the populace. Bernie getting the shot, in front of a camera for the world to see, demonstrates that he personally feels safe enough to get the vaccine. Trump probably won’t get his vaccine in public because he doesn’t want to show his flabby arms.

Sanders said, “Following the advice of the Office of the Attending Physician, today I received the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. As the vaccine is being distributed, we must all continue wearing masks and engage in social distancing. That is how we will beat this virus and end this terrible pandemic.”
